Derek Travis Silver Unit 1986 Camaro #StreetOutlaws
Derek Travis from the Street Outlaws show on the Discovery Channel took his 1986 Camaro to the Outlaw Armageddon Race at Thunder Valley Raceway in Noble Oklahoma in 2016. At this race he was first paired up against fellow Street Outlaw Monza (Jerry Johnston) who drives the black 1972 split bumper Camaro. In this race Derek got lucky because Monza was having purging issues on his Nitrous Oxide and his car bogged off the line while Derek did a wheelie and had to pedal the car to keep it straight. Monza came on like a freight train once his motor cleared up but did not have enough real estate to catch him in the 1/8 mile that they run at this event.
Derek move on to the second round and was matched up against a red 1955 Chevy Sedan. The ’55 launched perfect and had a fast run, but Derek did a wheelie and swung to the left a bit and had to let off the gas. When he left off the gas the car came crashing down with a shower of sparks coming from under the car. He lost and was out of the competition.
One side note on Derek’s Camaro is that it went under a massive weight reduction to keep up with the ProMod style cars that are entering the street racing scene as of late. He took the Camaro to a track to test it before this race and he actually crashed the car. He spun out and went nose first into the cement sidewall of the track taking out the whole front end. So at this race he pieced the car back together in a week or two into what you see in the video now. It actually looks great for how quickly it was put back together and it was great that he put the effort to make it back out at this event so quickly for the fans to enjoy the car and the racing.
